As the heavy monsoon showers wash over Kerala, marking the arrival of the auspicious Malayalam month of Karkidakam, the cultural capital of Thrissur is preparing for one of its most heartwarming and spiritually charged traditions.
On July 17, 2026, the historic premises of the ancient Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple will come alive with Aanayoottu—the annual ritualistic feeding ceremony of elephants.

A Divine Tribute to Ganesha
Rooted deeply in centuries-old traditions, Aanayoottu is far more than just a visual spectacle. Elephants are deeply revered in Kerala’s culture. By feeding and worshipping these gentle giants, devotees seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-faced remover of obstacles.
The day-long rituals begin in the early hours of the morning with the massive Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam—a sacred fire ritual utilizing thousands of coconuts, kilograms of jaggery, honey, ghee, and puffed rice. Following the homam, the Gaja Puja (worship of elephants) is performed by the temple priests.
The Ayurvedic Wellness Feast
Unlike other festivals where elephants are draped in heavy golden caparisons (Nettipattam), for Aanayoottu, they stand unadorned and natural. Dozens of elephants line up near the southern gopuram (gateway) of the temple to receive a specialized, healthy feast directly from the hands of the chief priest and enthusiastic devotees.
To prepare the tuskers for the monsoon season, they are fed specially rolled, large rice balls infused with an Ayurvedic rejuvenation mix, along with seasonal treats like:
- Sugarcane stalks
- Sweet watermelons
- Ripe bananas
- Jackfruit and cucumbers
This sacred feast marks the beginning of a month-long wellness and rejuvenation period (Sukha Chikitsa) for the elephants.
